Highlights

Point 1

Feel the History in the Deep Spot of Tomonoura

Funaba Feel the History in the Deep Spot of Tomonoura
In Tomonoura, there is a furnace reinforced with stone from the Edo period, but it is now located underwater and cannot be seen directly. However, at the current site of the furnace, you can enjoy a relaxed and pastoral scene with boats anchored in the calm sea! It is recommended to take a leisurely walk as you can go all the way to the beach. On your left, you can see the port and lighthouse of Tomonoura, and on your right, you can overlook the bay where Yodohime Shrine is located, experiencing the scale of Tomonoura Bay!
Point 2

Take a Stroll Through the Retro Townscape Around the Furnace

Funaba Take a Stroll Through the Retro Townscape Around the Furnace
After taking a good look at the furnace, why not take a leisurely walk through the retro townscape surrounding it? The area around the furnace, which preserves the scenery of an old-fashioned port town, has many interesting discoveries to offer! The road from Tomonoura Port to the furnace is narrow, with only enough space for one car to pass through, and the area is full of winding streets and densely packed old houses. Along the way, there are local shops, cats leisurely strolling around, and many narrow alleys, making it an adventurous townscape that will stir your sense of exploration. So take your time and enjoy a relaxing stroll!
Point 3

Relax on the Gangi and Enjoy the Harbor View!

Funaba Relax on the Gangi and Enjoy the Harbor View!
After enjoying the bonfire, it's recommended to return to the harbor and take a break while sitting on the Gangi! Tomonoura has several historically valuable Edo period port facilities, and one of them is the Gangi. The Gangi is a staircase-like pier, allowing ships to dock at the harbor even when the water level changes with the tides. The stone steps facing the sea make for a perfect spot to sit and relax! There is also a cafe nearby called "Shionoto Tomonoura Daifuku" where you can get takeout. Furthermore, there is a service that lends out mats for free so that you can sit comfortably on the Gangi and experience the beautiful scenery and history of Tomonoura! It's about a 15-minute walk from the bonfire to the Gangi.
Point 4

View the Furnace from the Stone Breakwater!

Funaba View the Furnace from the Stone Breakwater!
At Tomonoura Port, there is an impressive stone breakwater (seawall) and if you go to its tip, you can see Tomonoura Port from the sea side. This is also a historically valuable structure, with a total length of 146 meters and was built during the Edo period. It's recommended to see the furnace and gangway before going to the breakwater. By looking at the furnace on the west side from a distance, you can feel the dynamism of Tomonoura Port! It's rare to see the town from the sea side, so it's also nice to sit on the breakwater and leisurely gaze at the town for a while.
Point 5

Have Tea at the Funamansho Cafe!

Funaba Have Tea at the Funamansho Cafe!
After seeing various historical port facilities in Tomonoura, we recommend the cafe located in the Funamansho, which managed the entry and exit of ships in the port. This cafe is located on a hill near the breakwater, and the splendid stone walls give a sense of history! If you climb up the narrow stairs, you will find the old house cafe "Chabou Funamansho." They offer daily specials and curry, and we recommend having lunch while looking at the sea in front of you! There is also a terrace seat, making it a perfect place to relax while gazing at the sea!

History

Funaba See the History and Burnt Fields of Tomonoura Port!
See the History and Burnt Fields of Tomonoura Port!
A burnt field is a place where ships are maintained by burning and drying the bottom of the ship to remove shells and shipworms attached to the wooden hull. In Tomonoura, you can see the historic burnt field site from the Edo period. The burnt field site is located on the west side of Tomonoura town, and you can feel its remnants as you go closer to the coast. It's a recommended spot for those who want to feel the history of Tomonoura! There is no parking nearby, so it's recommended to park your car in the parking lot in the center of Tomonoura and walk, or take a bus from Fukuyama Station to Tomonoura. The burnt field is a deep spot that is a little away from the town center of Tomonoura, so it's recommended for those who want to deeply explore Tomonoura or those who want to have a relaxing trip while enjoying the view of the sea!
