宮島の歴史と文化に関わる多彩な資料の保存と継承を目的とした施設で、主に江戸時代以降の宮島での生活を知ることができます。 江戸時代に建てられた住宅を展示施設の一部として活用した資料館です。外観から想像できないほどに建物内部は広く、展示内容も充実しています。 入館料の支払いにクレジットカードやスマホ決済は使えませんでした。

厳島神社をはじめとする宮島の歴史、そして人々の暮らしにかかわるいろいろな事物などを紹介する史料館です。 展示エリアはいくつかに分かれているのですが、昔使われた道具などを紹介する展示館Aや、大しゃもじが並ぶ展示館Cなどは、雰囲気は感じられるものの、説明も少なくてちょっと未整理という感じです。 一方で、厳島神社や平清盛についての説明がある展示館Dは、博物館ぽくてパネルなどの説明もわかりやすく作られています。 やや雑然としてはいますが、それも魅力の一つで、全体としてはなかなか面白い史料館だと思います。 とくに厳島神社について詳しく知りたければ、非常に有益なのではないでしょうか。
