History

Kurashiki Bikan area The Edo Period's Presence is Still Strong
The Edo Period's Presence is Still Strong
The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter was established as a direct territory of the shogunate, known as "tenryo," in the early Edo period. The Kurashiki River flows through the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, and the town prospered as a center for water transportation and trade. Although it developed as a hub for the transportation of goods, the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter was left behind in modernization during the Meiji period's industrial revolution. As a result, the town's appearance from the Edo period remains intact, and the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter still exudes a sense of history to this day.
