大山夏山登山道から入ってすぐのところにあります。大山寺に現存する寺院の中では最古の建築物で亨禄2年(1529年)に山津波で倒壊し、室町末期の天文21年(1552年)に現在の場所に再建されました。もともと常行堂として建てられたもので、明治に行が行われなくなると、阿弥陀を祀るための堂(阿弥陀等)と呼ばれるようになりました。 本尊は、天承元年(1131年)に仏師 良円によってつくられた木造阿弥陀如来坐像(266㎝)でその両脇には観音と勢至の両菩薩が安置されており、建物、仏像共に国の重要文化財に指定されています。 見学は3月〜12月の毎月18日のみ堂内を公開(9:00〜16:00)、それ以外の日の堂内拝観は要予約となっており、堂内拝観志納金200円が必要です。

室町時代に建てられたという大山寺最古の建物。 建物と仏像は重要文化財とのこと。 冬季だったからかお堂は閉められていましたが、森の中にひっそりと佇む姿は趣がありました。
