A modern mountain castle that overlooks the Seto Inland Sea.

From the mountain castle, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Iwakuni City, including famous sites such as the Kintai Bridge and Yoshika Park, as well as the Seto Inland Sea, including Miyajima. In addition, the stone walls of the castle's ruins have been restored using the same stone masonry techniques as in the past, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the weight of history.

See the Rare "Momoyama-style Nanban-zukuri" Architecture

One of the unique features of "Iwakuni Castle" is its rare and globally recognized "Momoyama-style Nanban-zukuri" architecture, where each floor protrudes further out than the one below it. When looking at the large, protruding castle, you may wonder how it maintains its shape... It's a sight to behold! Take your time to explore the castle walls and admire the beautiful and rare architecture.

View Exhibits Inside the Castle Tower

The first to third floors inside the castle tower serve as exhibition rooms, displaying Japanese swords, armor, weapons, and more. You can see replicas of armor such as the "Hachiken Hoshi Kabuto Nima Do Gusoku" and famous swords like "Hizen Kuni Tadayoshi". Photographs of major castles throughout Japan, along with swords and portraits and biographies of famous people from Iwakuni, are also on display, making you want to take your time and thoroughly explore the exhibits.

Enjoy the View from the Top Floor

The top floor of the castle tower serves as an observation deck, offering views of Iwakuni City, the Seto Inland Sea, and the changing seasons of nature. The southwest direction is particularly worth seeing, as you can view the Nishiki River, Kintai Bridge, and Iwakuni City. On clear days, you can even see the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, Shikoku, and Miyajima, making it exciting to anticipate what kind of scenery you'll see.

See the Rare "Karahori"

Iwakuni Castle has a "karahori" that is approximately 19.6 meters wide, 10 meters deep, and 58.2 meters long. A karahori is a type of moat that does not contain water (in contrast to a water-filled moat). It is a deep and high moat that is created to prevent enemy invasion. It is rare for a karahori to be built in a mountain castle like Iwakuni Castle, so be sure to see the ingenuity of the people of the past in their defense!

View the Automaton Clock While Waiting for the Ropeway

Near the mountaintop station of the ropeway, there is an "automaton clock" where you can see automaton dolls with a song at a specific time. The music you can hear varies depending on the season and time, but you can mainly hear nursery rhymes (such as "Spring has come," "Ukai Ondo," "Beautiful Nature") every 15 minutes. Why not take a look and listen to it during the waiting time for the ropeway?

Take Home a Castle Stamp as a Souvenir

At the ticket booth (entrance) of Iwakuni Castle's main keep, you can purchase a popular "castle stamp" as a commemorative item for climbing the national castle. The regular version costs 300 yen per stamp, while the premium version costs 500 yen per stamp. Since it is sold as a commemorative item for visitors, it is not available for mail order or delivery. History

With a History of Being Demolished 7 Years After Its Construction

Iwakuni Castle was built in 1608 by the first lord of the Iwakuni Domain, Hiroie Kikkawa. It was a three-story, four-tiered Momoyama-style castle with southern barbarian architecture. However, just 7 years after its construction in 1615, it was demolished due to the "one castle per province" law issued by the Tokugawa shogunate. The current castle tower was rebuilt in 1962 and inside, you can see historical artifacts such as weapons and armor from that time period. Be sure to take a look!

Recommended Access by Car

Iwakuni Castle is a castle located in the eastern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is recommended to access by car, about 10 minutes by car from Iwakuni IC (about 1 hour by car from Hiroshima Station to Iwakuni Station). If you come close by bullet train, it is easy to access by renting a car after getting off at "Shin-Iwakuni Station". If you visit only by public transportation, take a bus for 20 minutes from Iwakuni Station (bound for Kintai Bridge) and get off at "Kintai Bridge", then it takes a 10-minute walk to arrive.

If You Want to Take Your Time Sightseeing, Allow 1.5 Hours

Iwakuni Castle is one of Japan's Top 100 Castles, with plenty of sights both inside and outside the castle keep. It's recommended to allow 1 to 1.5 hours for your visit to feel at ease. To reach the castle keep of Iwakuni Castle, you can take the ropeway from the foot of the mountain to the mountaintop station in about 3 minutes, or it takes about 30 minutes on foot. Since it takes a lot of time to go back and forth on foot, let's take the ropeway and enjoy the view!

お城自体は近代工法で再建された建物のため、あまり期待してませんでしたが、予想外に楽しめました。ロープウェイとお城橋のセット購入をおすすめかなり安く見て回れます。ロープウェイ後、山道と舗装路ありますか？どちらも雰囲気があって良いです。おすすめは行きは山道、帰りは舗装路がいいのではないでしょうか。く車が通れる広さですが、石垣が残り、東中は林間でなかなか静寂な気持ちのいい道です。場内は博物館となっており、特に武具刀剣が動いたね。なかなか見応えがありました。午前中天守閣から見える川べりの美しさはなかなかのものです。ロープウェイも15分単位ですが、人が多い時は臨時便約56分単位での往復をされているようなので、あまり待つこともなく観光できると思います。ぜひ橋だけではなく、お城も見ることをおすすめしたいです。

岩国城は、初代岩国藩主吉川広家によって、江戸時代初期の1608年に作られた山城で、眼下を流れる錦川を天然の外堀にし、標高約200メートルの城山の上にあります。天守閣最上階の展望台からの眺めは素晴らしいです。眼下に見える錦帯橋や岩国の城下町を始め、晴れた日には瀬戸内海の島々を見渡すことができます。ロープウェイ山頂駅からは徒歩10分弱で、山道を行くルートと舗装された道路を行くルートがあります。いずれのルートでも所要時間は同じくらいです。岩国城は、とても短命なお城だったようで、築城後7年で江戸幕府が制定した一国一城令により取り壊されました。現在の天守は1962年に再建されたものです。取り壊された天守閣は、今の天守閣よりも山の中に30mほど行ったところにありましたが、再建する際に錦帯橋から見える場所が良いという観光名所としての景観を重要視して今の場所に再建されたそうです。 ↓↓ここからはおまけの情報。お城の中に展示されていた説明パネルの一枚に書いてあったことが何となく印象に残り、そこからの抜粋です。↓↓ 一国一城令が出されると、各地の大名はその領国に応じて残せる城以外はすべて廃城とし壊さなければならなりました。このとき、岩国城を壊すよう毛利輝元からの命令がありましたが、吉川広家は周防国には岩国以外に城がないため、壊す必要はないのではないかと主張しました。しかし、長門国では萩本藩の萩城を残すために長府の毛利秀元の城を壊さなければならなかったため、岩国の城も壊すようにと重ねて伝えられ、最終的に壊すこととなりました。関ヶ原の戦いで吉川広家が毛利輝元に相談せず徳川家康と密約を結んで以降、毛利氏の一族団結において感情的不和が心配されたため、その配慮もあって壊したともいえます。また、1637年〜1638年にかけて起こった島原の乱において、壊された城跡が再利用されたことから、石垣についても破壊が命じられました。これにより石垣も壊すことになりましたが、東側の石垣が安全上残されたのをはじめ、壊されていない箇所もあることから、吉川広家が城の破壊に消極的で、対外的に破壊しなければならない最低限の範囲で破壊したことが伺えます。せっかく築いたお城を壊すのに納得がいかない藩主の思いが伝わってくるような気がしました。

城下からロープウェイで岩国城側まで約3分で到着しますが、個人的には遊歩道での登山？をおすすめします。約35〜40分歩くことになりますが、綺麗な城下町の景色を横目に見ながらワクワクしながら登城することができます。お城の中は岩国城由来の様々なものが展示してあり、お城の頂上からの景色は絶景です。ただ私の中で1番おすすめはお城のさらに奥にある「空堀」です。大河ドラマの真田丸などでも「空堀」という言葉が出てきますが、いまいちピンときていませんでしたが、一目で「これが空堀か」と分かるくらい大規模で圧倒されます。岩国城にお越しの方はぜひ寄ってください。本当におすすめです。ちなみに御城印は書き置きタイプのものをお城で購入できますが、日付は自分で入力してね（お城側では書かないよ）のスタイルで、少し残念でした。
