Highlights

Point 1

A Stunning Waterfall, One of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls

Oshinkoshin Falls A Stunning Waterfall, One of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls
Oshinkoshin Falls is a large waterfall with a drop of about 30 meters. It's also known as "Futami Falls" because the flow splits into two streams partway down. You can climb up to the middle of the waterfall on stairs, and the view of the waterfall right in front of you, with spray hitting your face, is impressive. Especially during the hot summer months, you can feel the oppressive heat of summer while enjoying the cool spray.
Point 2

Powerful Frozen Waterfalls and Drifting Ice!

Oshinkoshin Falls Powerful Frozen Waterfalls and Drifting Ice!
In winter, the Osinkoshin Waterfall freezes over, creating a powerful sight of pure white ice looming before you. Across the road, you can see the drifting ice approaching the Sea of Okhotsk. This is the only place in Japan where you can see drifting ice. Come and experience the power of two types of ice - frozen waterfalls and drifting ice!
Point 3

Surrounded by Lush Nature, the Waterfall is a Must-See

Oshinkoshin Falls Surrounded by Lush Nature, the Waterfall is a Must-See
To get to the Osin Koshin Waterfall, you must travel along a national road sandwiched between the sea and mountains. It's very pleasant to drive while looking at the clear blue sea on your left and the fresh green mountains on your right. From the parking lot, it takes about 15 minutes to reach the waterfall by walking up a gentle staircase. The path is well maintained, so you can easily go in casual clothing. It's also enjoyable to walk towards the waterfall while breathing in the refreshing air surrounded by the lush green trees on both sides of the staircase leading from the parking lot to the waterfall.
Point 4

Winter Illumination!

In winter, half of the Oshinkoshin Falls freezes over. During the day, it shows a beautiful appearance like an ice field, but at night, it is illuminated, and you can see a fantastic landscape that is completely different from the daytime. The event is held every year from late February to early March. It is illuminated to coincide with the Aurora Fantasy held in Shari Town, so it is recommended to inquire in advance with Shari Town when visiting.
Point 5

Lots of Famous Tourist Spots in the Surrounding Area!

Oshinkoshin Falls Lots of Famous Tourist Spots in the Surrounding Area!
If you drive about 20-30 minutes from the Oshinkoshin Falls, you can visit other tourist spots in Shiretoko. Especially the "San-dan-no-taki" and "Furube-no-taki (Maiden's Tears)" waterfalls are a must-see. There are few famous waterfalls in Hokkaido, and it's only here where you can easily see three waterfalls just by car. In addition, the Utoro Onsen has effects on neuralgia, coldness, joint pain, and more, making it a perfect place to heal your tiredness after Shiretoko sightseeing. Please try to visit there after seeing the waterfalls.

Access

Recommended Access by Car!
We recommend accessing Oshinkoshin Falls by car, as there are no trains that pass through the area. From JR Senmo Main Line "Shiretoko-Shari Station," take the Shari bus and get off at "Oshinkoshin Falls." However, there are few buses, so you may end up spending several hours at Oshinkoshin Falls. If you plan to go by train, it's important to carefully plan ahead.

Required time

See the Waterfall in Just 15 Minutes
It takes about 10 minutes to walk from the parking lot to Osinkoshin Falls. Since the waterfall is located in an easily accessible area, you can see it and return to the parking lot in just 15 minutes. We recommend not only visiting Osinkoshin Falls, but also visiting other tourist spots such as the three-tiered falls and Furube Falls around it, as well as the Shiretoko Nature Center.

History

"Oshinkoshin" is an Ainu word
"Oshinkoshin" is an Ainu word that means "a place where Ezomatsu trees grow in clusters near the riverbank (o-sunku-us-i / Osunkuushi-Osunkuushi-i)." There is a cluster of Ezomatsu trees growing near a stream that flows around the eastern side of the cape, and it is said that the name of this area became the name of the waterfall. In addition, the river into which the waterfall flows, "Charassenai River," also means "a river where the sound of flowing water is heard" in Ainu. As many place names in Hokkaido are in Ainu, researching the meaning of each one deepens our understanding of the area.
