Features & How to Enjoy

Highlights

Point 1

The Snow Wall, Towering High

Yuki no Otani The Snow Wall, Towering High
The world-renowned tourist spot, the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, is a mountain sightseeing route that runs through the Northern Alps, a range of peaks reaching an altitude of 3,000 meters, connecting Toyama and Nagano. The highlight of spring to early summer tourism on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is the "Yuki no Otani" or "Snow Wall". The "Otani" near Murodo is a snowdrift, so it has an especially large amount of snow. The depth of the snow can exceed 20 meters, and the huge snow wall, which can reach a height of 20 meters, is created by removing snow from the road that passes through this "Otani". Its height is breathtaking, and the sightseeing bus passing through the gaps in the huge snow wall seems as small as a toy!
Point 2

Take a Walk in the "Snow Wall"

Yuki no Otani Take a Walk in the "Snow Wall"
One of the highlights of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route's "Snow Wall" is the enormous snow wall that appears for a limited time, but the "Snow Wall Walk" is an event that you'll want to experience at least once in your lifetime. You can walk on one side of the pedestrian path that is opened as a passage for walking between the walls of snow, and you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery up close, which is as high as 20m. However, it's essential to prepare for the cold with warm clothing, gloves, hats, and sunscreen to protect against snow reflection and sunburn, as well as the expected crowds. It's recommended to visit in the early hours of the day.
Point 3

Enjoy Access with a Variety of Vehicles!

Yuki no Otani Enjoy Access with a Variety of Vehicles!
At the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, where private cars are restricted, there are various vehicles such as trolley buses, tram trains, ropeways, and cable cars. Therefore, accessing the "Snow Wall" requires transferring between public transportation. Especially, the "Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus" that connects Nagano Prefecture to Kurobe Dam and the "Tateyama Ropeway" that offers a panoramic view of Tateyama are sure to excite you not only with the scenic views along the way, but also with the experience of getting there by unique means of transportation!
Point 4

Experience Snow Play Unique to Tateyama

Yuki no Otani Experience Snow Play Unique to Tateyama
From mid-April to late May when the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is fully open, various snow play experiences unique to Tateyama are offered, including the popular annual event "Yuki no Otani Walk" (Snow Valley Walk). During this time, you can enjoy various attractions such as the limited-time snow promenade "Panorama Road" where you can overlook the Tateyama mountain range, an exhibition of snowplows indispensable for creating the "Yuki no Otani" (Snow Valley), the giant igloo "Yuki no Pocket" at the Daikanbo Station, and the "Snow Tunnel" where snow is removed in an arch shape along the passage to the observation deck. Let's enjoy the snow play experience of Tateyama through various attractions!
Point 5

Staying Overnight is Recommended for a Leisurely Trip

Yuki no Otani Staying Overnight is Recommended for a Leisurely Trip
While it's possible to enjoy "Yuki no Otani" on a day trip, why not consider staying at the nearby accommodations for a more leisurely experience? The Murodo area, which is the highest point (elevation of about 2,450m) of the Alpine Route and hosts events including the "Yuki no Otani Walk" from spring to early summer, offers various accommodations. Additionally, there are accommodations available at the major transportation hubs of Oyama and Tateyama stations, as well as the natural hot spring "Mikurigaike Onsen," which is the highest source of hot spring water in Japan. It would be enjoyable to choose accommodations based on the purpose and preferences of your trip.

Access

Yuki no Otani Be aware of restrictions on driving your own car
Be aware of restrictions on driving your own car
There are two ways to access Yukinotani from the Toyama side depending on the season, and one way to access it from the Nagano side. Firstly, from the Toyama side, there is a method of taking the Tateyama Ropeway and Tateyama Cable Car, and a method of using the limited-time Tateyama Murodo Direct Bus. The former has transfers, but is considered cheaper with more options for round-trip travel times, while the latter has no transfers and allows for easy access, but has limited time at the destination. On the other hand, the method from the Nagano side is to take a bus, cable car, or ropeway from Oyama Station. The characteristic of this route is that you can enjoy the scenic views along the way, such as the quiet Kurobe Dam without tourist water and the stunning Tanbo Plateau during this season. Please try accessing it in a way that suits your travel purpose.

Recommended attire

Recommended Dress for Snowy Otani Walk Even in Early Summer!
The Snowy Otani Walk is held from mid-April onwards, but due to its high altitude, winter clothing is necessary. Until you arrive at the site, you may be surrounded by spring weather, and if the weather is good and sunny, you may not feel extremely cold despite the temperature. It's recommended to wear long-sleeved shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, and fleeces layered with thin down or windbreakers that can block the wind. As there is snow and ice, it's best to wear outdoor trekking shoes, but if you don't have them, wear shoes with soles that are as non-slip as possible. As the sunlight is very strong when it's sunny, be sure to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat to prevent snow reflection. Also, when taking a stroll, it's best to use a backpack that leaves both hands free, and as the weather changes frequently, rain gear such as a raincoat is better than an umbrella.
