Tonami Tulip Park

富山県
4.2
Tourist Information of This Area
general.prefecture.
Toyama's prefectural flower, the tulip, blooms in the park.
The park is known for its 21-meter-tall tulip tower, and holds a tulip fair from late April to Golden Week every year. During this period, you can enjoy 3 million colorful tulips. In the summer, the park is a place to enjoy nature other than tulips, such as sunflowers.

Features & How to Enjoy

Classic Nature

Highlights

Point 1

Representative Tulip Festival in Japan

Every year, the "Tonami Tulip Fair" is held, with Tonami Tulip Park as the main venue (it may be canceled due to social circumstances). Tonami City in Toyama Prefecture has the largest area of tulip bulb cultivation in Japan. According to the official announcement for 2023, during the fair period, 3 million tulips of 300 varieties will bloom brilliantly. Various events are also held during the period, making it a tulip festival that everyone from small children to adults can enjoy.
Point 2

The Newly Renovated Tulip Tower

Tonami Tulip Park The Newly Renovated Tulip Tower

In 2021, the old tower, which had long been beloved as a symbol of the park, was demolished due to aging. The old tower was built in 1972 as a commemorative project for the 20th Tulip Fair. There was a rare period in 2021 when the old and new towers were standing side by side, as the old tower was demolished shortly after the new one was completed. The tulip monument at the top of the new tower is inspired by the real varieties, Toyama Red, Shirakumo, and Kogoma Yellow. The new tower is 4 meters taller than the old tower, with a total length of 26 meters. Climbing the spiral staircase in the center will take you to the observation deck. Please come and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Tonami.
Point 3

The Only Five-Story Waterwheel in Japan

Tonami Tulip Park The Only Five-Story Waterwheel in Japan
In one corner of the park, there are five large waterwheels. The official name is "Goren Yousui Suisha," and it was built for tourism purposes. The only five-story waterwheel in Japan has a strong presence and actually rotates while playing a refreshing water sound. It seems that 220 buckets on both sides of the outer circumference scoop up 22.3 liters of water per second. In addition, there are other waterwheels such as the "Spiral Waterwheel" invented in Tonami, where the difference in water level is small, and the "Karakuri Dolls" and "Uwagake Waterwheel" where you can enjoy waterwheel puppet shows and children's Kabuki. The karakuri dolls are made very realistically, and sometimes children cry when they see them.
Point 4

Fluffy Monsters and Kochia Festival

Tonami Tulip Park Fluffy Monsters and Kochia Festival
Tulip Park is symbolized by tulips, but of course, you can't enjoy tulip viewing outdoors except in the spring. However, various other flowers and trees are planted in the park, offering seasonal enjoyment throughout the year. Among them, the group of "kochia" that comes into bloom from summer to autumn is gradually gaining popularity. This plant, also known as "broom grass," has a cute monster-like appearance with its lush green leaves in summer. Then, in autumn, it turns bright red, dyeing the surroundings in autumn colors. Although the best time to see it is in autumn, admission and parking are free except during the Tulip Fair, so please stop by if you're in the area!
Point 5

Enjoy Tulips All Year Round at the Four Seasons Hall

Adjacent to Tulip Park is the Four Seasons Hall, a facility where you can enjoy tulips all year round. The main attraction is the Palette Garden, where approximately 5,000 tulips bloom in a room with temperature control. The garden features domestic and foreign varieties, from rare to classic shapes, providing a space to enjoy tulips all year round. In addition, there is a corner where you can learn about the secrets of tulips, as well as a cafe and planned exhibitions, making it a facility where you can relax and enjoy yourself.
Point 6

Fairy Tale Illumination with Plenty of Magical Elements

During the winter in Tonami City, the plants are covered in snow and go to sleep. However, at Tulip Park, the "KIRAKIRA Mission" (illumination) is held for a limited time every December, illuminating the park and surrounding areas beautifully, including the Tulip Tower. In the 2022 event, about 100,000 lights were used, impressing visitors with a beauty reminiscent of a dreamland.

Access

Convenient Shuttle Bus Available During the Season
Access by car is usually about a 7-minute drive after getting off at the Hokuriku Expressway Takaoka Tonami Smart IC. However, during the Tulip Fair, it's expected to be very crowded. If you don't want to get caught in traffic, it's also a good idea to get off at the interchange before Tonami. If you're using public transportation, the nearest station is JR Tonami Station. From there, you can take a taxi or a free shuttle bus that runs during the season and arrive in about 5 minutes. Many people also walk from JR Tonami Station to the south entrance of the park, which takes about 11 minutes on foot. Additionally, you can rent a bicycle at the JR Tonami Station Tourist Information Center, so consider using it if the weather is good.

Parking

Spacious Parking Lot Surrounding the Area
At Tulip Park, the parking lot is normally free and there are spacious parking lots surrounding the area. The main ones are located on the side of the "Tulip Color Museum," "Tonami City Art Museum," and "Tonami City Cultural Hall." During the Tulip Fair, a parking fee of 500 yen is charged. During the rest of the year, when the season arrives, there are many one-way signs and it is expected to be very crowded, so it is recommended to head there early if you want to park nearby. However, there are many temporary parking lots opened by individuals near the venue, so if you want to park quickly, it may be a good idea to use them. You can easily find signs for temporary parking lots while driving along National Route 156.

Fee

Free Admission Outside of Fair Period
As of 2023, the admission fee for the Tulip Fair is 1,300 yen for adults (high school students and above) and 200 yen for elementary and junior high school students. It's a good deal to purchase advance tickets, which are sold at convenience stores and on the web, as they are each 100 yen cheaper. Additionally, parking during the fair period is charged at 500 yen. Children's Day on May 5th is free for junior high school students and younger, so it's a great opportunity for those with children. Outside of the fair period, admission is free.
