Mikurigaike Pond surrounded by the mountains of Toyama
Mikurigaike is one of Toyama's scenic spots. The sight of the mountains reflected on the surface of the water is truly a panoramic view of nature. You can enjoy the beautiful Mikurigaike at any time of the day, but the sight of it turning red as it is illuminated by the setting sun is breathtaking.

Highlights

Point 1

Mystical Azure Lake Surface

Mikurigaike Mystical Azure Lake Surface
"Mikurigaike Pond" has a circumference of 631 meters and a depth of up to 15 meters, making it the largest in Murodo and considered the most beautiful volcanic lake in the Northern Alps. The reason for its beauty is the clear air that creates an azure lake surface. The surrounding mountains and sky are reflected on the wide surface, sometimes creating an upside-down image of the Tateyama mountain range like a mirror. Many legends have been born from its mystical appearance. When visiting Murodo, be sure to feel the mysterious power of "Mikurigaike Pond," estimated to have been formed about 10,000 years ago.
Point 2

Lakeside Promenade

While there are several walking routes at Tateyama Murodo, one of the most casual and satisfying courses is the "Mikurigaike Pond Circuit Course". Although there are cobblestones and stairs, there are also promenades around the lake, making it a course that can be enjoyed by children and the elderly. Various alpine plants can be enjoyed at your feet, and the surrounding area is covered with Japanese stone pine, making it a habitat for the national natural monument "raicho" (rock ptarmigan). If you're lucky, you might even see the raicho, also known as a messenger of the gods.
Point 3

Competing with the Three Mountains of Tateyama

Located in the northern part of the Northern Alps, Mt. Tateyama is one of Japan's 100 famous mountains. From the shore of Mikurigaike Pond, you can get a front-row seat to view the three mountains of Tateyama: Oyama, Onanjiyama, and Fujinooritate. It's no wonder that many alpinists and photographers visit repeatedly to capture the natural beauty of the competition between Mikurigaike Pond and Mt. Tateyama. Why not find the perfect spot and try your hand at taking the best photos?
Point 4

Alpine Plants Adorning the Lakeside

Mikurigaike Alpine Plants Adorning the Lakeside
Around the Murodo area, where the air is thin and the sunlight is intense due to its high altitude, delicate alpine plants delight the eyes of tourists despite the harsh conditions. They bloom one after another during the short period between spring and summer, coloring the mountains. The promenade around Mikurigaike Pond is perfect for admiring alpine plants, especially in the recommended season of July and August. It's also great to go plant-watching with a field guide and camera in hand, with black lilies, rock cress, alpine bellflowers, and cinquefoils among the many species to be found.
Point 5

A Habitat for the Special Natural Monument, the Rock Ptarmigan

Mikurigaike A Habitat for the Special Natural Monument, the Rock Ptarmigan
The rock ptarmigan, the official bird of Toyama Prefecture, is a rare bird that changes the color of its feathers to blend in with the snow in winter and the rocky terrain in summer. Tateyama Murodo is one of the best bird-watching spots in Japan, as it is a habitat for the Japanese rock ptarmigan. In May and June, the parent and child birds are often seen around the high-altitude pine trees, where they hide from predators. If you're lucky, you might encounter a family of rock ptarmigans while strolling around Mikurigaike Pond.
Point 6

Enjoy the Snowy Mikurigaike Pond in Early Spring

画像引用:とやま観光ナビ
In the snow-covered Tateyama, winter tourism naturally comes to a close. Mikurigaike Pond is also completely covered in snow and ice until June, making it look like a depression rather than a lake. However, just like the famous "Yuki no Otani," there are tours available in the "spring" season, which is like the plains' winter, where you can catch a glimpse of "winter in Tateyama." In addition to the "Otani Bus Tour," there are also guided tours where you can stroll to the snow-covered Mikurigaike Pond. If you want to see the breathtakingly beautiful silver world, please apply for the tour.
Point 7

Autumn Leaves Like a Carpet Dyed in Autumn Colors

Mikurigaike Autumn Leaves Like a Carpet Dyed in Autumn Colors
When we think of autumn leaves, we usually imagine the beautiful colors of deciduous trees painting the mountains and streets. However, the autumn leaves along the Tateyama Alpine Route, such as at Murodo Plateau, are a carpet of high-altitude plants that change color all at once, dyeing the entire landscape in autumn colors. The view from the ropeway overlooking the autumn carpet is breathtaking, but walking around Mikurigaike Pond and enjoying the high-altitude autumn leaves up close is a sensation that cannot be experienced in everyday life.

Access

Access to an Elevation of 2,410 Meters is Surprisingly Easy
Mikurigaike Pond is a volcanic lake located at an altitude of 2,410 meters. However, it can be reached on foot in about 15 minutes from Murodo Terminal, the nearest station. However, there are ups and downs, such as narrow stairs, so those who are not confident in walking should be careful. Murodo Terminal is about a 7-minute cable car ride from Tateyama Station, the last stop on the Toyama Chihou Railway in Tateyama Town, Toyama Prefecture. From there, transfer to a bus at Bijodaira Station and arrive in less than an hour. Although it takes time, it's a popular tourist spot, so the guidance is simple and easy to understand. During the tourist season, you may have to wait in long lines to purchase tickets or board transportation. Check the timetable and plan carefully before heading out. During the busy season, direct buses are also available from JR Toyama Station and Michi-no-Eki in Tateyama Town, which are convenient. In addition, there are various climbing courses, and many alpinists visit on foot.
