Experience the History of Kyoto at Yasaka Shrine
Yasaka Shrine has long been affectionately referred to as "Gion-san" by the local people. Originally a sub-temple of Mt. Hiei's Enryaku-ji Temple, Yasaka Shrine separated from the control of Mt. Hiei after the temple was burned down by Oda Nobunaga in 1571. Since then, Yasaka Shrine has continued its unique Gion faith up to the present day. Along with newer buildings such as the South and West Temizuya and the Yatai-boko Storehouse, a total of 26 buildings within and outside the shrine have been designated as important cultural properties.
