Stay at a Spacious and Beautiful Traditional Inn

Tateshina Onsen Stay at a Spacious and Beautiful Traditional Inn

If you're looking to stay in the Tateshina Onsen area, we highly recommend the Tateshina Grand Hotel Takinoyu. This long-established hot spring inn, founded in 1923, maintains tradition and formality while offering the latest facilities and services. The first attraction is the three baths where you can enjoy the famous hot springs. There is a spacious "garden bath" where you can enjoy a view of the waterfall, which is the symbol of Takinoyu, a "streamside open-air bath" overlooking the Takinoyu River, and three "private baths". All of the baths use the source of the famous Tateshina hot spring, which is a gentle alkaline simple spring that is kind to the skin. Especially in the streamside open-air bath, there are several spacious bathtubs where you can relax and feel the changing seasons of nature, creating an atmosphere that makes you want to write a poem. The second attraction is the meals where you can enjoy fresh mountain and sea delicacies and Shinshu beef. We recommend the buffet-style plan for both breakfast and dinner, where you can enjoy over 50 Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes. Especially for dinner, you can enjoy carefully selected dishes such as tender and juicy Shinshu beef steak and Shinshu premium beef shabu-shabu. Local vegetables and fruits are also abundantly available, allowing you to fully enjoy seasonal flavors! In addition to a rest area with table tennis, massage chairs, and a manga corner, there is also a nursing room and a kids' room, so you can relax even if you have children.
Point 2

A Variety of Day Trip Hot Springs

Tateshina Onsen A Variety of Day Trip Hot Springs
Don't miss out on "Ko-sai no Yu," where you can enjoy a variety of hot springs with a day trip plan. Located on a hill surrounded by the forests of Tateshina Kogen, you can soak in hot springs that flow directly from the source while enjoying the natural beauty and breathtaking views of the four seasons. There are five open-air baths, each with its own unique features and atmosphere, but the most recommended are the "Miharashi no Yu" and the "Adachiuchi no Yu." The "Miharashi no Yu" boasts the best view from the open-air bath, as its name suggests. On a clear day, you can see Lake Tateshina directly below and the Southern Alps in the distance. The "Adachiuchi no Yu" is a rock bath surrounded by a mountain covered in bamboo grass, with a huge exposed rock face. You can enjoy the feeling of looking up at the blue sky, which opens up from the forest canopy. There are also other open-air baths to suit your preferences, such as the "Shinrin-yoku no Yu" and the "Kashikiri no Yu." All of the baths use the historic source of Tateshina Sanmuro Spring. This spring is a rare acidic hot spring with a high sodium-chloride and sulfate content, with a pH of 2.9, which is effective for skin diseases and atopic dermatitis, and is also said to have a high skin-beautifying effect. It is also said to be effective for cuts and abrasions. You can enjoy various views while healing both your body and mind.
Point 3

At Kogakushibu Tateshina, you can enjoy local cuisine and craft workshops, while Sundance Resort Tateshina offers cottages and dog runs where you can stay with your pet. Furthermore, Hütter Lodge & Cabins offers a variety of outdoor and glamping facilities and programs. Feel free to visit your favorite facility according to your mood.

Point 6

Learn about the Traditional Local Industry of "Kanten" Production

Tateshina Onsen Learn about the Traditional Local Industry of "Kanten" Production
After relaxing in the hot springs, why not visit the Ilisen Kanten Factory, which is about a 10-minute drive from the hot spring town? This long-established factory has been producing kanten (agar) for over 80 years, using the clean water and air at the foot of Mt. Tateshina to make their high-quality kanten. The highlight of the visit is the tour of the actual production site, where the guide will explain in detail the process of making kanten, from the raw material of agar to the finished product of stick or block kanten. You can also learn about the history and characteristics of kanten while enjoying the tour. In addition, during the winter season, you can experience "Tendashi," which involves lining up the kanten by hand in the field to dry. As a special bonus, you can take home the kanten you make during this experience. By melting the kanten and combining it with fruits, you can create a delicious and smooth jelly with a great taste. By the way, Chino City, where the hot spring town is located, has been one of the leading kanten production areas in Japan since the Edo period. The reasons for this are the harsh cold suitable for kanten production, high sunshine hours, a climate with little snow, and an abundance of beautiful water. Learning about traditional local industries that make use of the region's characteristics is also one of the joys of traveling!

History

Tateshina Onsen A Place of Rest Beloved by Many Great People
A Place of Rest Beloved by Many Great People
The history of Tateshina Onsen is ancient, with a legend that it was discovered by the samurai, Sakamoto Tamuramaro, during the Heian period. During the Warring States period, it was known as a hidden hot spring where Takeda Shingen healed the wounds of his soldiers during his conquest of Shinano. Since then, many literati and artists have been drawn to the hot springs. One particularly famous person was film director Yasujiro Ozu. He was fond of the Tateshina Plateau, saying in his later years, "The water is good. The sake is good. The air is good," and built a villa there, producing numerous masterpieces. His villa, "Mugeiso," is still preserved today, and you can enjoy the "Yasujiro Ozu Memorial Tateshina Plateau Film Festival" every autumn. Other literary figures such as Mori Ogai and Natsume Soseki, as well as artists such as Yokoyama Taikan and Kikuchi Kan, have also left their footprints. Why not heal your fatigue in this treasure trove of history, contemplation, and tranquility, beloved by many great people?
