本堂は白壁土蔵造りで国指定の文化財だそうです。奥の細道の道中に松尾芭蕉と弟子の曽良が参詣したそうだ。なぜか鐘楼に鐘がありませんでした。

恐らくは唯一無二と思われる、土蔵造の大堂を持つ寺院です。正直、旧家の土蔵に毛が生えた程度のものを想像していたのですが、なかなかどうして堂々たる威容です。国重文に指定されているのもうなずけます。一般的な寺院建築とは大きく異なる外観ながら、内陣は伝統的な様式を踏襲していて、見事な調和を見せています。外壁は単調にならざるを得ませんが、向拝は華麗な彫刻によって飾られています。堅牢な土蔵造ゆえ雪囲いは不要で、冬季であってもじっくりと鑑賞できます。 本堂以外に見どころはありません。所在地である村上も観光地としてはマイナー感をぬぐえませんが、鮭と酒がとにかく美味く、独特の文化を育んでいる魅力的な土地です(と、ノープランで訪れて実感しました)。周辺観光をふくめて行って損はない名所であり、評価は★四つです。

浄土宗の寺院で1818年に建立された巨大な白壁土蔵造の本堂が珍しく国の重文指定となっております。 本尊の巨大な木造の阿弥陀如来の座像もすばらしく、二階の回廊や豪華な逗子など内部も見応え十分です(住職の許可必要です) 地蔵堂もあり、安産・子育て地蔵尊が安置されています。 藩主だった間部詮房の菩提寺であり、松尾芭蕉も参詣していて有難さの極み。
