History

Historic Kunozan Toshogu Shrine
Kunozan Toshogu Shrine was founded by Nichiren, a Buddhist monk, during the Kamakura period. Despite trying to spread the teachings of the Lotus Sutra and save many people during times of epidemics and natural disasters, his efforts were not accepted by the shogunate. However, he was invited by his follower, Lord Minamoto no Sanetomo, and entered the mountain on May 17, 1274. On June 17 of the same year, he built a hut at the foot of Nishitani and the teachings of Nichiren spread. Kunozan Toshogu Shrine has a long history and continues to attract visitors with its charm. Find peace of mind at Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, which radiates eternal brilliance, amidst the beautiful natural scenery.
