この水門は、柳川城城内と城外を結ぶ唯一の水門です。城の防御用として、又水害から城内を守る意味でも重要な役割を果たした水門です。 この水門を造ったのは、江戸時代初期筑後国領主として柳川に入城した田中吉政公です。町割などの実績を持つ吉政公は、柳川において、水辺や川を利用した城造り、町造りをおこないました。そのいっかんとして造られた水門と云えます。
