The Only Surviving Shiden Fighter Plane in the World

At the Chiran Special Attack Peace Museum, valuable materials such as personal effects and farewell letters left behind by special attack corps members who died in battle are on display. Among them is the remarkable Shiden fighter plane, of which only one remains in the world. The Shiden was a fighter plane used for special attack missions in the final stages of the Pacific War, and at that time, special attack corps members boarded it and carried out ramming attacks against enemy ships. Its rarity has attracted the attention of many people. At the Chiran Special Attack Peace Museum, this valuable Shiden fighter plane is on display, conveying to visitors the wartime situation, the courage, and the sacrifices of the special attack corps. The existence of the Shiden symbolizes the determination and bravery of the special attack corps members, and allows us to once again feel the tragedy of war and the preciousness of peace.

The Site of the Triangular Barracks Where Kamikaze Pilots Stayed

Near the Chiran Special Attack Peace Museum, there is a site where the triangular barracks where kamikaze pilots stayed once stood. The barracks were built in a pine forest a little away from the airfield to avoid air raids. The triangular barracks were made of half-buried wooden barracks, and young trees were placed on the roof for camouflage. Kamikaze pilots spent several days here before their departure. They trained and prepared themselves mentally, and made up their minds here. Currently, a monument has been erected on the site of the triangular barracks to convey its history. In addition, next to the Chiran Special Attack Peace Museum, a restored triangular barracks that reproduces the scene at that time is located. Here, you can catch a glimpse of the lives and environment of the kamikaze pilots at that time, and remember their courage and sacrifice!

A Romantic Peace Park with a Beautiful Cherry Blossom Tunnel

The Chiran Special Attack Peace Museum's Chiran Special Attack Peace Park is a beautiful cherry blossom park. The park is centered around the Chiran Special Attack Peace Museum and has many cherry blossom trees planted throughout. In particular, the cherry blossom tree at the entrance of the park was used as a filming location for the movie "I Will Die for You" and has grown into a large tree that forms a tunnel. This beautiful cherry blossom tunnel warmly welcomes visitors. At night, the park is lit up, creating a romantic atmosphere throughout. In the midst of the beautiful cherry blossoms, the Chiran Special Attack Peace Park becomes a peaceful place, providing visitors with an emotional experience. Along with the beauty of the cherry blossoms, the Chiran Special Attack Peace Park allows visitors to pay tribute to the sacrifices of the special attack squad members and offer prayers for peace.

The Kamikaze Peace Kannon Hall Symbolizing Peace and Respect

The Kamikaze Peace Kannon Hall at the Chiran Kamikaze Peace Museum is located in the Chiran Peace Park. Inside the hall, a small golden Kannon statue is enshrined. The statue was specially cast with permission from the secret statue of the Yumedono Kannon at Nara's Horyu-ji Temple. The Kannon statue sits quietly, watching over peace and praying for the repose of the souls of the kamikaze pilots. The Kannon Hall, along with the Chiran Kamikaze Peace Museum, serves as a place for visitors to honor the courage and sacrifice of the kamikaze pilots. The spacious front yard of the Chiran Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots displays various aircrafts such as the Type 1 fighter "Hayabusa" and the T-3 training plane of the Air Self-Defense Force. In addition, many statues, monuments, and bells are also placed, one of which is the statue of the Kamikaze Warriors. The statue depicts a young soldier in military uniform and symbolizes the courage and sacrifice of the Kamikaze members. About 15 Minutes by Car from Ibusuki Skyline Chiran IC

The Chiran Special Attack Peace Museum is located in Minamisatsuma City, Kagoshima Prefecture. If using public transportation, take the Kagoshima Kotsu Bus bound for Chiran Special Attack Kannon Entrance from the east exit of JR Kagoshima Chuo Station and get off at the Special Attack Kannon Entrance bus stop after about 1 hour and 20 minutes. It's about a 3-minute walk from the bus stop. If using a private car, it's about a 10km distance from the Ibusuki Skyline Chiran IC and can be reached in about 15 minutes.
