雄龍・雌龍の岩と書いて「オタツ・メタツノイワ」と読みます。中種子の西岸にある名勝で、観光のマストスポットです。2泊3日の最終日、朝一番で行ってきました。西之表のホテルを出て鹿児島県道58号を南下すると20分くらいで辿り付けました。 海に向かって左側が雌龍、右側が雄龍岩と呼ばれる「夫婦岩」です。近くの高台に住んでいた夫婦が崖崩れに会い、行方不明になりました。しばらくして、この岩が突然出現します。人々はこの岩は二人の生まれ変わりだとして祀るようになったそうです。 遊歩道があり岩の近くまでは行けるようです。しかし例によって「速攻観光」だったので、道路わきからの遥拝にとどめてしまいました。ネットには「接近写真」も結構アップされているので、ちょっと悔しいです。もう20分くらい長逗留して海岸まで降りてみればよかったと思います。でも後悔先立たず、ですね。 ところで、この夫婦岩は恋愛成就・縁結びのご利益があるんだそうです。なるほど。長年疑問だった「離島閃隊 タネガシマン」の碑文の意味がようやく分かりました。

向かって左が雌龍岩、右が雄龍岩です。とても興味深い物語が伝わっています。「天の神様は力持ちで働き者の雄龍王に、人の住める緑の美しい島を作るように言われました。雄龍王は心優しい雌龍姫の協力を得、種子島を作り上げました。神様は二人に人間の種子をあたえ、二人は生まれた人間を育てながら暮らしました。やがて、年老いた雄龍王と雌龍姫は大きな岩となったと伝えられ、今も種子島の繁栄を見守っているとのことです」 とても綺麗な海が広がっており西側に沈む夕陽を臨むベストスポットです。
