Features & How to Enjoy

Classic Onsen

Highlights

Point 1

Enjoy the "Beauty Hot Springs"

Hirayama Onsen Enjoy the "Beauty Hot Springs"
The water at Hirayama Onsen is an alkaline simple sulfur spring known as the "beauty hot springs." The warm, slippery, and soft water is like a cosmetic beauty serum, leaving your skin feeling moist even after getting out of the bath. While it's nice to stay at a hot spring inn of your choice and enjoy it at your leisure, there are also easy-to-access hot springs where you can stop by and enjoy a soak on your travels.
Point 2

Choose a Hot Spring Inn that Suits Your Purpose

Hirayama Onsen Choose a Hot Spring Inn that Suits Your Purpose
There are a total of 14 inns in Hirayama Onsen, ranging from detached rooms with open-air baths to affordable public inns, so choose a hot spring inn that suits you! "Hotaru no Nagaya" is especially recommended for those who want to indulge in luxury. It is a hidden inn limited to 5 groups per day, with all rooms in detached buildings, providing a private and secluded hot spring inn experience. The guest rooms feature open-air baths and rock baths, allowing you to enjoy high-quality hot springs anytime, and you can also savor creative cuisine using Kumamoto's local ingredients.
Point 3

The "Hirayama Onsen Yumeguri Senjyafuda" allows you to enjoy the hot springs of two of your favorite Hirayama Onsen facilities, and visit two locations, "Hirayama Aso Shrine" and "Yakushido", where you can receive stamps and commemorative gifts. There is no expiration date, so you can take your time and enjoy the experience at your own pace. Why not purchase it as a souvenir of your visit to Hirayama Onsen, as it can be purchased for 1500 yen? Pray for beautiful skin with the Yumeguri Senjyafuda.
Point 4

Try Your Luck with a "Yumikukji"

Hirayama Onsen Try Your Luck with a "Yumikukji"

One experience we highly recommend at Hirayama Onsen is the "Yumikukji". This is an omikuji (fortune-telling paper) that appears on the surface of the hot spring water, making it the first of its kind in Japan. It's sure to be exciting as you wait for the characters to appear. It's available for 300 yen per try and can be purchased at member inns and hot spring inns affiliated with the Hirayama Onsen Tourism Association, so it's easy to give it a try. Why not attach an omikuji to the hot spring once and try to connect with the gods?
Point 5

Enjoy the Changing Seasons

Hirayama Onsen is a "hidden village" surrounded by rich nature of greenery and water. Here, you can enjoy the changing seasons of nature. In spring, you can enjoy the blooming of rapeseed flowers and cherry blossoms all around. In summer, it's famous for being a firefly village and for the nationally renowned festival of lantern dancing. In autumn, you can enjoy the collaboration of colorful autumn leaves and the unique sounds of insects in the countryside. In winter, you can enjoy the deep snow and the light of lanterns. You can enjoy visiting in any season.
Point 6

Relax and Refresh in the Sauna

Hirayama Onsen Relax and Refresh in the Sauna
At the inns in Hirayama Onsen, "Taichi," "Flora," "Zenya," "Hana no Bandai," "Okuyama Shika Onsen," "Yunokura," and "Keiso," there are サウナs where you can experience the true essence of サウナ. By increasing sweating and metabolism through the heat, you can receive detox effects and your tired body will feel refreshed. With サウナs available at all seven facilities, be sure to enjoy them to the fullest!
Point 7

Savor Local Cuisine

Hirayama Onsen Savor Local Cuisine
At Hirayama Onsen, you can taste the local cuisine at inns and restaurants. In particular, we recommend trying the "tofu" and Kumamoto's specialty "basashi" (horse sashimi). The tofu, made with high-quality hot spring water without any additives, can be enjoyed at Yamato Ryokan in Hirayama Onsen. As the inn originally started as a tofu shop, they have a reputation for their tofu dishes. As for basashi, being a Kumamoto specialty, you can enjoy fresh horse meat sashimi at various inns. Which cuisine would you like to savor the most?
