Higashiosaka Residence Memorial Museum

4.1
Tourist Information of This Area
general.prefecture.
The "Higashiosaka Residence" is a two-story wooden Western-style building that was built in Shisakajima (Imabari City) as a separate residence for the Sumitomo family in 1906. After more than 110 years, it had deteriorated due to aging, so it was relocated and restored to Hoshigoe Mountain in the city of Niihama, where Shisakajima can be seen in the distance. In November 2018, it was opened to the public as the "Higashiosaka Residence Memorial Museum," which aims to widely disseminate the history of Sumitomo's efforts to overcome air pollution. The external fixtures such as the roof tiles, outer walls, and windows that had deteriorated, as well as the structural materials such as pillars and beams related to seismic and durability performance, were faithfully reproduced with new parts. On the other hand, the internal parts were reused as much as possible, and about 95% of the approximately 10,000 parts, including floor materials, waistboards, ceiling materials, interior fixtures, and fireplace stones and furniture, were relocated and restored.
