Highlights

Point 1

Get Up Close and Personal with the Whirlpools on the Uzushio Sightseeing Boat

Naruto's Whirlpools Get Up Close and Personal with the Whirlpools on the Uzushio Sightseeing Boat
There are two types of sightseeing boats, the first being the "Large Sightseeing Boat, Wander Naruto". This large boat leisurely approaches the center of the whirlpools, allowing you to see the powerful whirlpools up close. Reservations are not required and it's a large boat, so it's safe for children. The second is the "Small Submerged Sightseeing Boat, Aqua Eddy". Here, you can see the whirlpools from underwater, from an observation room located 1 meter below the water's surface! Reservations are required, but you can enjoy a different view of the whirlpools from above. If you've come all this way, be sure to see the whirlpools up close.
Point 2

Peek into the Whirlpools from the "Uzunomichi" Path

Naruto's Whirlpools Peek into the Whirlpools from the "Uzunomichi" Path
The "Uzunomichi" path is a seaside promenade where you can take a walk while watching the whirlpools from a height of 45 meters above the sea. It's a valuable experience to walk the 450 meters to the observation room while feeling the sea breeze. In addition, there is a glass floor at your feet, allowing you to see the whirlpools from directly above. It's a little scary, but looking down at the whirlpools from the glass floor is a powerful and surprising sight.
Point 3

Be Amazed by the Speed and Size of the Whirlpools

Naruto's Whirlpools Be Amazed by the Speed and Size of the Whirlpools
The whirlpools of Naruto may not seem that big when seen in photos, but did you know that they can reach a diameter of about 20 meters? That's about as high as a 7-story building, so it's quite surprising. In addition, the speed can reach 13-15 km/h, and during the spring and autumn tides, it can reach up to 20 km/h. It's said to be the fastest current in Japan, so you can see just how fast the whirlpools are.
Point 4

Learn Deeply About Whirlpools at Eddie

Naruto's Whirlpools Learn Deeply About Whirlpools at Eddie
Located next to the Uzushio Road, the "Onaruto Bridge Memorial Museum Eddie" is an experiential museum where you can learn about whirlpools and bridges. The building itself is designed in a spiral motif based on whirlpools, and inside you can learn about the mechanism of whirlpool generation and the history of the Onaruto Bridge. It would be even more interesting to visit after seeing the whirlpools.
Point 5

Indulge in Local Cuisine after Viewing the Whirlpools

Naruto's Whirlpools Indulge in Local Cuisine after Viewing the Whirlpools
After viewing the whirlpools, head to "Michi-no-Eki Uzushio" on the Awaji Island side to enjoy some local cuisine! We highly recommend the "Awaji Island Onion Beef Burger." This hamburger, which uses plenty of onions from Awaji Island, is delicious because the onions themselves are sweet and fresh. There's also an onion sculpture, so be sure to take a commemorative photo and make some memories!

Sightseeing

Naruto's Whirlpools Witness One of the Three Great Currents of the World
Witness One of the Three Great Currents of the World
The Naruto Whirlpools are one of the "Three Great Currents of the World," along with the Messina Strait in Italy and the Seymour Strait in Canada. This rare current is created by the intense tidal currents of the Seto Inland Sea and the Kii Channel, and is a natural phenomenon that is surprising to behold. Although it reaches its maximum size during the spring and autumn tides, the whirlpools are said to be the largest in the world, with a diameter of up to 20-30 meters. It's definitely something you'll want to see at least once.

Access

Naruto's Whirlpools Recommended to Access by Car
Recommended to Access by Car
To see the Naruto Whirlpools, it is recommended to view them from the "Uzushio Kansokisen" or the promenade "Uzu no Michi", both of which are conveniently accessible by car. Uzu no Michi is a 5-minute drive from the Naruto-kita Interchange on the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway, and you can park at the nearby Naruto Park parking lot. Uzushio Kansokisen is also a 4-minute drive from the same interchange, and with 150 free parking spaces available, you can rest easy. It's a 75-minute drive from Kobe Sannomiya Station, making it easy to visit from mainland Japan as well.

I recently visited Naruto Strait to see the whirlpool. It was a day filled with excitement and wonder as I witnessed the power of nature firsthand. As I boarded a sightseeing boat and headed towards the center of the strait, the whirlpool gradually grew larger and I could see it spinning with a roar up close. It felt like I was inside a giant washing machine. When the boat entered the vortex, the hull shook violently, and I was overwhelmed by its power. I was told that the size of the whirlpool changes depending on the tide, but the day I visited, it was particularly large, and the whirlpool I saw from the boat was truly a spectacular sight. In addition to the sightseeing boat, I was able to enjoy the whirlpool in various ways, such as walking along the Uzu no Michi (Whirlpool Road) and visiting exhibitions about the whirlpool. It was a valuable experience that made me feel the mystery of nature.
