Taichoro

In 1711, the Korean envoy who was brought to this hall saw the view in front of him and called it "Nitto Ichikesho," meaning the most beautiful view in the east of Korea. The scenery visible from the tatami room is just as beautiful as it was back then. If you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy the view at a leisurely pace, it is recommended to visit early in the morning. Admission is 200 yen for adults, 150 yen for junior high school students, and 100 yen for elementary school students. The opening hours are from 9:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and from 8:00 to 17:00 on weekends and holidays. You will surely be healed by experiencing the beautiful scenery in the leisurely flowing time!

Tairo-ro is known as a place associated with Ryoma Sakamoto. It was the location where negotiations were held regarding the collision accident between the Iroha-maru, which Ryoma was on in April of Keio 3 (1867), and the Meiko-maru, which the Kishu clan was on. There are also exhibits on the Iroha-maru incident, making it a great opportunity to enjoy the stunning views while reflecting on history. For those who love Ryoma Sakamoto, we recommend the "Tomonoura Ryoma Hospitality Team," a tourist volunteer guide that appears in the town of Tomonoura on weekends and holidays. If you're lucky, you can take a photo with a guide dressed as Ryoma and learn a lot from them!

The tatami room in Taichoro has a red carpet and is built to face the sea, with pillars that look like picture frames, making it a perfect spot for taking photos. The calm Seto Inland Sea and the islands in front of you are very picturesque, as if you've entered a fairy tale world. On clear days, the contrast between the blue sea and sky, the green of the islands, and the red carpet is striking, making for beautiful photos!

At Taichoro, you can experience copying Buddhist scriptures in a separate room from the tatami room where you can enjoy a spectacular view. From the window of the scripture copying room, you can see the beautiful Senzui Island and the retro tourist boat Iroha Maru passing by from time to time. This is recommended for those who want to have an even more special experience in this stunning scenery. The fee is 1,000 yen. After being fulfilled by the beautiful scenery, copying Buddhist scriptures can further calm and relax your mind. This is a recommended activity for those who want to take it slow at a temple or those who want to have a relaxing trip where time is forgotten.

There is no parking on the grounds of Taichoro, but the walk from the nearest parking lot to the temple is one of the pleasures. The temple is built on a small hill, and the road leading to it climbs up a narrow slope that cars cannot enter. The narrow alleyways and densely packed old houses unique to the port town are a very enjoyable place to stroll around. There are many spots within walking distance that you will want to take your time exploring, such as the famous Tomonoura symbol, the lighthouse, cafes, souvenir shops, and more.
