凄い山の上にある建造物です。初心者の方が車で来るのはかなり大変な場所です。銅がたくさん採取されていた昔にはすごく活気があったんだろうなぁと思われる当時の写真が飾ってありました。日本のマチュピチュとも呼ばれるような建造物の数々は、昔の方々の素晴らしさが伝わってきました。この壮大さは是非現地へ行って見てもらうと良いと思います。ただ建造物の一番下まで行くと帰りに300段近い階段を登らないと行けないので体力に自信の無い方はあまり一番下まで行かない方が良いのかも知れません。駐車場はたくさん停めれます。また駐車場のすぐ横にトイレがあります。資料館や工房もあります。

東平と書いて「とうなる」と読みます。知らないとまず読めない地名です。東平地区は大正から昭和のはじめにかけて別子銅山の採鉱本部が置かれた場所で、巨大な城塞を思わせる貯鉱庫と索道停車場の跡が忽然と山中に現れることから「東洋のマチュピチュ」と呼ばれているそうです。ただ、これほどの見ごたえであるならば、地球の裏側にある関連性ゼロの遺跡を持ち出さずとも、住友財閥の屋台骨を支え続けた産業遺産としてアピールしたほうがわかりやすいと感じました。かつては鉱山施設のみならず、急斜面にずらりと社宅が並び、大浴場に娯楽施設もあって、鉱山そのものがひとつの街を成していました。遺構多くは失われて久しいものの、先に挙げた貯鉱庫をはじめとした堅牢な建物の跡が、かつての繁栄の名残をとどめています。多くの採掘場跡と同じく、ここもアクセスが良くはありません。端出場地区のマイントピア別子までは路線バスが運行されているものの、その先の公共交通機関はタクシーしかありません。マイントピア別子からガイド付きツアーのシャトルバスが一一時と一三時に運行されているものの、東平地区の魅力を堪能し尽くすには滞在時間が十分とは言えません。ネット等での予習で代替可能なガイドさんの説明をありがたく拝聴するより、ここでしかできない産業遺産の鑑賞に時間をあてるのが合理的と考えます。ツアーであってもバスの到着から出発までは自由行動なので、自分なりの楽しみ方を追求してください。
