History

Discover the Charm of Amanohashidate's History
Amanohashidate is located in the northern part of Kyoto Prefecture and its name means "bridge to heaven". Its history is ancient and closely related to ancient myths and legends. According to legend, it's said that when the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, Susanoo-no-Mikoto, descended from heaven, he landed at this spot. Amanohashidate is a sandbar approximately 3.6km long and 20m to 170m wide, with about 5,000 pine trees planted on it. The shape of the sandbar is said to resemble a dragon ascending to heaven, as its ends curve. Its beauty has earned it a place as one of Japan's three most scenic views, and it has been loved by many literati, appearing in numerous poems and paintings. Additionally, this area has been a place of worship since ancient times, with Buddhist temples standing on both ends and a shrine at its center. Visitors not only enjoy the beautiful scenery, but also hold Amanohashidate in high regard as a place of worship that has been passed down since ancient times. Amanohashidate's history can be said to be a wonderful symbol of the deep connection between Japan's nature and culture!
