Highlights

Point 1

Don't Underestimate It - Miyako Island's Stunning Bridge

Ikema Bridge Don't Underestimate It - Miyako Island's Stunning Bridge
Miyako Island has three long bridges connecting the surrounding islands, and "Ikema Ohashi Bridge" is one of the most popular tourist spots due to its stunning views. The reason for its popularity is the emerald green sea known as "Ikema Blue". As you go further offshore, you can enjoy a gradient that changes from cobalt blue. The area around Ikema Ohashi Bridge is very shallow, and the sea bottom is close to the surface, so when the sun shines on it, it sparkles and shines, making it mesmerizing to look at the pattern on the surface of the water. Driving through Ikema Ohashi Bridge, which runs through the middle of the sea, is an exhilarating experience!
Point 2

Target the Low Tide of the Spring Tide! The Phantom Island that Appears on the Surface of the Water

Ikema Bridge Target the Low Tide of the Spring Tide! The Phantom Island that Appears on the Surface of the Water
The sea around Ikema Ohashi Bridge is relatively unaffected by weather conditions, but if possible, try to go during the low tide of the spring tide. At the point when the tide recedes greatly, sandbars appear on the surface of the water. They only appear for a limited time, so they are sometimes called "phantom islands." During that time, you can even walk closer to the sandbars. Be careful not to get your feet stuck in the sand and take a walk through the breathtaking sea!
Point 3

Take a Walk Under the Bridge

Ikema Bridge Take a Walk Under the Bridge
You can walk down to the base of the bridge from either the Miyako Island side or the Ikema Island side. It's not often that you get to see the bridge from below, but you can experience the power of the Ikema Ohashi Bridge, which stretches straight through the blue sea, up close. It's also fun to take pictures with the Ikema Ohashi Bridge in the background on the small beach there!
Point 4

Check out the View from the Observatory on Ikema Island

Ikema Bridge Check out the View from the Observatory on Ikema Island
If you want to see the "Ikema Ohashi" bridge from above, head to Ikema Island! On the second floor of a restaurant called "Kaimiru" located just after crossing the Ikema Ohashi bridge, there is an observatory where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the bridge. In fact, it's not an exaggeration to say that this is almost the only spot where you can see the Ikema Ohashi bridge from above. The restaurant also sells ice cream and juice, so why not take a break and stop by?
Point 5

View the Panoramic View of Ikema Bridge at Nishi Hennazaki!

View the Panoramic View of Ikema Bridge at Nishi Hennazaki!
We also recommend visiting Nishi Hennazaki, where you can see the panoramic view of Ikema Bridge and Ikema Island. Nishi Hennazaki is a long, narrow cape located in the northwest of Miyako Island, and is one of the representative scenic spots of Miyako Island, famous for both its sunrise and sunset views, as there is nothing to obstruct the view on either side. There are well-maintained promenades and observation decks where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Ikema Bridge and Ikema Island. Be sure to take a photo of the stylish bridge that can be seen beyond the beautiful sea. As there are few tourists, you can spend a relaxing time there.

A Breathtaking Bridge at the Northern Tip of Miyako Island
The "Ikema Ohashi Bridge" is a 1,425m bridge that connects Ikema Island and Miyako Island on the north side of Miyako Island. It's about a 30-minute drive from Miyako Airport. If you continue north on Route 230, you'll see beautiful seas on both sides. Then, the Ikema Ohashi Bridge is right there. After passing through the village and fields, the road suddenly opens up and your spirits lift as you feel excited by the breathtaking view.

Parking

Ikema Bridge Parking spaces are available on both ends of the bridge
Parking spaces are available on both ends of the bridge
There are places to park your car on both the Miyako Island side and the Ikema Island side. The Ikema Ohashi Bridge is not just for crossing - it's a spot where you'll want to get out of your car and take pictures of the bridge spanning the sparkling sea. The sea around the Ikema Ohashi Bridge is very shallow, so during low tide, you can walk a little way with your feet in the water. At the time of spring tide, you may even see phantom sand beaches appearing here and there during low tide. However, please note that the current around the Ikema Ohashi Bridge is fast and dangerous, so never swim there.
