A Townscape that Blends the Remnants of the Showa Era with Modernity

Yokohama Motomachi Shopping Street A Townscape that Blends the Remnants of the Showa Era with Modernity
Yokohama Motomachi Shopping Street has a history of over 150 years since Yokohama's opening to the world, and its charming townscape blends a nostalgic atmosphere with modernity. The origin of Motomachi dates back to 1860 when residents of Yokohama Village were forcibly relocated, and later the village became Yokohama Motomachi. Motomachi, which was a quiet agricultural and fishing town, transformed into a foreign settlement on the hill of Yamate and has become what it is today. The Phoenix Arch, built in 1985, is the symbol of Motomachi. The arch embodies the message "Soar into the Light" and expresses the idea of inheriting tradition while always living anew. Please take a stroll through this town with a deep history.
