神奈川県のJR湯河原駅から2月下旬の土曜9:20頃から仲間16人で標高563mの城山(土肥城跡)登山を楽しみ、途中でまずは湯河原駅から徒歩約10分の城願寺へ寄ってみました♪ 城願寺は曹洞宗(禅宗)のお寺で、大本山は福井県の永平寺や横浜市の總持寺のようです。 また、この城願寺は鎌倉幕府創設の源頼朝を助けた土肥次郎実平など一族の菩提寺とのことです。 そして国指定天然記念物の推定樹齢850年、樹高20mを誇るヒノキ科ビャクシン(柏槙)が素晴らしかったですね♪ らせん状に上の方に木のねじれがあるのが特徴的です。 これは迫力がありましたね。 この木は、領主「土肥実平(どひ さねひら)」の手植えで、1180年(治承4年)8月23日の源頼朝や実平ら武将たちが平家討伐のために鎌倉へ出陣するのを見守ったとは歴史があります。 しかも、この木は神奈川県最大の樹木として1984年に「かながわの名木百選」にも選ばれています。 それから、寺内には土肥実平が腰掛けたと伝わる腰掛け石もありましたね。 そして、大正2年には当時の大正天皇の皇子の昭和天皇12歳と秩父宮11歳が、歴史の勉強のためにここを見学されたようです。 それから、寺内では、ピンク色の梅の花が満開で素晴らしかったですね♪

土肥実平の菩提寺で、一族の墓や本堂、七騎堂、五輪塔などが立つ。実平は石橋山の合戦で平家に敗れた源頼朝を大庭景親の軍勢から守り、源氏再興に尽力した「頼朝七騎」の一人。境内には実平自らが植えたという、樹齢約800年のビャクシンの大木(天然記念物)があり、また寺からは、土肥実平の居城があった城山へ行くことができる。山頂には土肥城址があり、真鶴半島や相模湾などを一望できます。ビャクシンは国指定天然記念物にも指定されており、力強くねじれている幹、そしてなんといってもその20mを誇る大きさに圧倒されることでしょう。 湯河原のパワースポット巡りには欠かせない場所ですね。
