The View of Goryokaku from Goryokaku Tower is a Must-See

Goryokaku Tower, a 107-meter high observation tower located next to Goryokaku Park, is a recommended spot that you should definitely climb when visiting Goryokaku Park. The tower is equipped with an observation deck, and from the top floor, you can overlook the entire Goryokaku Park. Goryokaku Park is famous for its star-shaped design, and by climbing the tower, you can enjoy the same view as the one featured in guidebooks.

Goryokaku Park is famous as one of the top cherry blossom viewing spots in the region, with approximately 1,500 cherry trees, mainly of the Somei Yoshino variety, growing naturally throughout the park. Every year, they reach full bloom from late April to Golden Week, providing a perfect opportunity for cherry blossom viewing. Not only during the day, but also at night, you can enjoy the sight of the cherry blossoms illuminated by lanterns. This spot is sure to create unforgettable memories in a fantastic atmosphere created by the cherry blossoms.

Learn about History at the Goryokaku Historical Corridor

On the top floor of the Goryokaku Tower, in the observation area on the second floor, you can find the "Goryokaku Historical Corridor," where you can learn about the history of Goryokaku Park. Goryokaku Park was the site of the Boshin War, and provides detailed information on the historical background and key figures leading up to the war. It's not just a tourist spot, but can also be used for children's summer research projects. Additionally, the bronze statue of Toshizo Hijikata is also a must-see attraction.

At the moat that surrounds Goryokaku Park, you can take a boat and explore the park. You can see beautiful scenery such as cherry blossoms and fresh greenery from the back of the castle walls and above the pond, which cannot be accessed on foot. There are two popular restaurants within walking distance of Goryokaku Park. The first is "Lucky Pierrot Goryokaku Park Front Store," where you can try the famous Hakodate Chinese chicken burger. The second is "Hakodate Menchubo Ajisai Honten," famous for its Hakodate salt ramen. Both restaurants have long lines during lunchtime, but their flavors are sure to impress! Be sure to visit and try them out.

Numerous Paid Parking Lots in the Surrounding Area!

In the vicinity of Goryokaku, there are numerous paid parking lots available for tourists, such as the Hakodate Goryokaku Tourist Parking Lot and the Hakodate City Art Hall Parking Lot C. All of the parking lots are relatively large in size, and there is usually little congestion. However, during the cherry blossom season in spring, they tend to fill up quickly and there may be a waiting time for entry, so be careful. The fees for all parking lots are not significantly different, so it's recommended to park in an available spot.

Anyone Can Enjoy a Free Stroll at Goryokaku Park!

Goryokaku Park is a popular tourist spot designated as a special historic site by the government, but anyone can freely enjoy a stroll through the park for free. The "Hakodate Magistrate's Office" in the center of the park requires an admission fee of 500 yen for adults, but it's a spot you'll want to visit if you have the time as it has many valuable exhibits related to the Boshin War. While strolling is free, please note that entry to the inner citadel is restricted to certain times.
