The Holy Land of Papermaking: Okata Shrine and Otaki Shrine

Located in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, Okata Shrine and Otaki Shrine were born from the legend of a beautiful princess who appeared about 1500 years ago and taught the villagers the art of papermaking, thus becoming the ancestral god of Japanese paper at Okata Shrine. Otaki Shrine, on the other hand, is a major shrine in Japan that was established as a Shugendo training ground by Taicho Daishi, who worked to protect and develop papermaking. With its rich natural atmosphere and many highlights such as the main hall and worship hall designated as important cultural properties, it is a spot where you can feel the history and culture of papermaking in Japan.
Point 2

Beautiful Roof with Intricate Sculptures and Hinoki Bark Shingles

The beautiful roofs of Okata Shrine and Ootaki Shrine are covered in hinoki bark shingles that create a wave-like pattern. Intricate sculptures of lions and dragons adorn the roofs. These historical buildings have been designated as important cultural properties by the government, and the main shrine in particular is known for its exquisite carvings that cover every inch of the eight-roof structure. Not only can visitors appreciate the craftsmanship of the carpenters who built it, but they can also see the beauty of the local area, which has a deep connection to paper-making.
Point 3

The Main Shrine Honoring the Goddess of Paper

The main shrines of Okata Shrine and Ootaki Shrine are dedicated to the goddess of paper. It is a representative tourist spot of Echizen City and is known as the only place in Japan where the goddess of paper is enshrined. The intricacy of the roof, which seems to be made up of many waves, and the sculptures are breathtaking. During the spring and autumn festivals, there are plenty of events such as horse racing, yabusame (horseback archery), and yunohana (hot spring flower viewing). This place, which is also noteworthy as a historic building, is especially loved by those who have a deep understanding of Japanese paper culture.
Point 4

Handmade Shrine Stamps on Washi Paper

The charm of Okata Shrine and Ohtaki Shrine lies in their handmade shrine stamps on washi paper. Made with Echizen Washi, a traditional craft of Echizen City, these shrine stamps are definitely worth seeing. You'll be drawn to their beautiful designs! Why not feel the special blessings obtained in this area, known as a holy land of papermaking, where Kawakami Gozen is enshrined?
Point 5

The Main Hall of the Hachiman Shrine located at Okata Shrine and Otaki Shrine

The Main Hall of the Hachiman Shrine located at Okata Shrine and Otaki Shrine in Echizen City is a beautiful building that was rebuilt in the late Edo period.
