槇文彦設計の美術館があると知って30余年、ようやく来館できました。朝8時から開館、休館日なし、入館料はわずか300円です。 近代日本画・洋画、薩摩焼、パプアニューギニアの民具などがあります。 いわさきホテルという昭和の巨大ホテルの一角ですが、平日だったためか閑散としていました。かつては大勢の人が来たであろうことを想像させる名残があり、切ないです。開館した当時の1983年と現在では、アートの流行りも違い、美術館にも旬があることを思い知らされました。 2棟の展示室は地下で繋がっています。館内は撮影禁止、30分ほどで見終えてしまいました。

ホテルから少し離れた場所にあり、訪問客も少なく、館内は全体的に薄暗くて薄気味悪い。 入館料は驚くほど安く、建物は美術館と工芸館が併設されており、館内を広く使って展示され展示数も多い。 美術館は自然光が入る作りだが、全体的に照明は暗め。曇りだと怪しさすら感じられる。工芸館にあるパプアニューギニアの民具コレクションは圧巻!!! コンクリート打ちっ放しの外観や、美術館と工芸館の回廊、テラスから望む自然いっぱいの中庭など!建築物としても見る価値がある。指宿に来たら必見の美術館。

いわゆる明治時代に財をなした名士の所蔵した美術品を展示した美術館。入館料300円でこれはすごい。東郷青児、黒田清輝などの作品が惜しみなくどどーんと展示されている。 その他、なんでも鑑定団に持って行ったら驚きの価格がつきそうなのがごろごろ。 小ぶりの美術館ゆえに、逆に見学疲れもない。指宿で時間があればぜひおすすめ。 なお、併設の工芸館も面白いが、一階がパプアニューギニアの民芸品展示で、あまりのギャップに度肝をぬかれる
