Highlights

Point 1

Visit "Jigokudani" with Countless Limestone Rocks

Akiyoshidai Visit "Jigokudani" with Countless Limestone Rocks
"Jigokudani," located in the northern part of Akiyoshidai, is a must-see spot with the largest number of limestone rocks. Limestone pillars line the entire area, and it has been designated as a special natural monument. When you consider that this place was a coral reef in ancient times and has risen over a long period of time to its current state, you will be overwhelmed by the power of nature. There is a promenade, but even the promenade is filled with limestone rocks, so it's best to wear comfortable shoes for walking.
Point 2

Try Walking Your Favorite Trekking Course

Akiyoshidai Try Walking Your Favorite Trekking Course
There are five trekking courses available, allowing you to choose your preferred course based on the required time and which areas you want to visit. For those who want to enjoy the karst plateau quickly, we recommend the "Taisho-do Course" or the "Karst Observatory Course". For those who want to fully enjoy Akiyoshidai, we recommend the "Chojagahara Course 1", "Chojagahara Course 2", or the "Akiyoshidai Family Travel Village Course", which take about 2 to 2.5 hours. Consult your own physical strength and be sure to feel the great scenery nearby!
Point 3

Drive on the Karst Road

Akiyoshidai Drive on the Karst Road
Yamaguchi Prefecture Route 242, also known as the "Akiyoshidai Skyline" or "Karst Road," is a scenic driving route where you can enjoy breathtaking views. The road runs north to south through the Akiyoshidai karst terrain, allowing you to admire countless limestone pillars while driving. In spring and summer, the grasslands are particularly covered in fresh greenery, making it a great time to roll down the windows and take a drive.
Point 4

Stroll through Chojagamori, known as a Power Spot

Akiyoshidai Stroll through Chojagamori, known as a Power Spot
"Chojagamori" is the only primeval forest in Akiyoshidai, a vast grassland with almost no trees. Legend has it that it was either planted by Heike refugees who lost the Battle of Dan-no-ura or by local merchants. The forest is pleasant with dappled sunlight and is also known as a power spot. There are said to be traces of an old well in the forest, so why not take a walk and try to find it?
Point 5

Take a Break While Enjoying Stunning Views at the Geopark

Akiyoshidai Take a Break While Enjoying Stunning Views at the Geopark
Next to the Karst Observation Deck, there is the "Mine Akiyoshidai Geopark Center Karstar," a tourist information facility. Not only does it provide information on how to enjoy the geopark and surrounding tourist spots, but it also has a cafe where you can take a leisurely break. You can savor "Akiho's Pear Soft Serve" and "Fruit Cider" while enjoying the stunning views of the karst. It's perfect for a break after a long walk.
Point 6

Experience Different Faces Depending on the Season

Akiyoshidai Experience Different Faces Depending on the Season
Due to its rich natural terrain, Akiyoshidai shows different faces depending on the season. From spring to summer, it is covered in dazzling new greenery and wildflowers, making it the best season for taking photos. In autumn, the grasslands begin to change color and susuki grass starts to bloom, creating a complete contrast to the previous seasons. In winter, with the vegetation dying, the rocky surface becomes more exposed, and if it snows, the contrast between the snow and the rocky surface is beautiful. For your first visit, we recommend coming in the spring or summer when the greenery is at its most beautiful!

Explore Japan's Largest Karst Plateau
"Akiyoshidai" is Japan's largest karst plateau. White limestone rocks protrude from the grassy plains as if they were flocks of sheep as far as the eye can see. These are limestone rocks that were buried underground and were uplifted by plate tectonics and brought to the surface, containing many fossils of marine organisms. Let's actually feel the history of Akiyoshidai, which was created over a long period of time!

Access

Arrive by Car in about 30 Minutes from JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station
Access to Akiyoshidai is convenient by car or bus. Particularly recommended is access by car, which takes about 30 minutes from JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station, where the Shinkansen stops, and about 45 minutes by car from Yamaguchi Ube Airport. You can rest assured that there are plenty of parking spaces available. If you access by bus, it takes a little longer than by car, but buses run from JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station and Mine Station. Especially from Mine Station, you can ride at a low price because of the tax investment.
