熊野古道 に点在する熊野九十九王子社のひとつ 境内の駒札より... 『塩屋王子神社の祭神は天照大神のほか十一神。主神の天照大神の神像が美しいことから別名「美人王子」と崇められてきました。 (中略)和歌山県聖蹟には美景の地に鎮座することから美人王子と称えたのであろいうと書かれている。 今日では美しき子が授かると言われ若い夫婦や女性の参拝が盛んである。』

熊野古道紀伊路の日高川を渡って海沿いに近い王子社。熊野九十九王子社は最初に七社造られたそうですが、塩屋王子はその一社で特別古く由緒あるお宮です。祭礼時には七人の美人さんが入っていたので美人王子の別名があります。
