This is Japan's largest irrigation pond, built over 1,300 years ago for agricultural purposes. It is said that Kukai rebuilt the pond, which had repeatedly collapsed. Also, due to its age and size, it is said to be a pond where a dragon god lives and is known as a power spot.

Manno Pond is a tourist spot located in the Kotohira area of Kagawa, which is known for its famous attractions. It is a 15-minute taxi ride from the nearest JR Kotohira Station, and a 40-minute taxi ride from Takamatsu Airport. If you are driving, it is about a 25-minute drive from the Zentsuji IC on the Takamatsu Expressway, and about a 40-minute drive from the Mima IC on the Tokushima Expressway. With easy access from the airport and station, enjoy nature watching at the pond.

新聞やテレビで見慣れた 6/15のゆる抜きを初めて見物。噴き出す大水を近くで生で見ると、飛沫を浴びられて確かにおもしろい。 インタビューを受けた見物客がよく「蒸し暑かったが、一気に涼しくなった気がする」 と答えていたが、本当に涼しかった。 神事が10時、開門は12時から。 12時近くになると木造の遊歩道が徐々に混雑してきたが、人混みで見えないほどのことはない。 放水量も安定し大水を見慣れる頃には、皆さんとっとと帰途につき、遊歩道もガラ空き。 ただ、一般客が使える駐車場は、すぐ近くにはほたる見公園下(13台ほどのみ)しかなく、あとは1km南の満濃池森林公園の駐車場。 警備員も出ており、路駐も困難です。

弘法大師空海さんのゆかりの地。当時、唐から持ち帰った技術を用いて沢山の人や労力、物資が動いたかと思うと感慨深い。現代にも通用するアーチ式の技術が堤体に用いられ長年人々の生活を守ってきたかと思うと宗教を超えたマルチクリエイターぶりを感じる偉業のひとつ。

その昔弘法大師「空海」が作ったという満濃池、もう池と言うにはあまりにも広大すぎる。四国山地の山をバックにまるで湖かという姿を見せてくれる。農地への取水口もデカい、春にはたくさんの田圃へ水を満たす大切な池でもある。
