In the fourth year of the Keian era, Tokugawa Iemitsu ordered his advisor, Abesho Bungo-no-kami Tadayuki, to build a Toshogu Shrine in honor of his grandfather, Tokugawa Ieyasu, at the Hoju-ji Temple. Thus, the Hoju-ji Toshogu Shrine was completed and established. Along with Nikko Toshogu Shrine and Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, the Hoju-ji Toshogu Shrine is considered one of the "Three Great Toshogu Shrines" and has been designated as a national important cultural property. The Hoju-ji Toshogu Shrine is located about 5 minutes from the Yuya Onsen and can be reached by climbing 1,425 steps from the bottom or walking from the parking lot at the summit. The gate and the roof of the hand-washing basin tell the story of their age, making the building a charming one. The beauty and historical background of the Hoju-ji Toshogu Shrine attract many people. Why not visit it once?
