Handa Canal Canal where you can enjoy historic streetscapes and black storehouses!
Canal where you can enjoy historic streetscapes and black storehouses!
Handa Canal is a canal that was excavated at the mouth of the Jukkagawa River, the largest river on the Chita Peninsula. During the Edo period, Handa prospered in the brewing of sake and vinegar, which were exported to Edo through Handa Port. However, the accumulation of sediment from the Jukkagawa River became a problem. In response, the canal was excavated from 1688 to 1704, restoring the function of Handa Port and enabling the smooth transportation of vinegar and sake as well as the import of raw materials. Today, the historic and atmospheric streetscape of that time remains, and blackboard-fenced storehouses still line the Handa Canal. Handa Canal is recommended for those who want to enjoy cultural heritage such as historic streetscapes and black storehouses, so be sure to visit!
