A national scenic spot and natural monument created by the erosion of rough waves and the uplift of earthquakes. A hiking course is maintained that connects to an observation deck, which offers a panoramic view of the Kumano Sea. Cherry blossoms are planted along the hiking course, making it a famous cherry blossom viewing spot.

In the summer, the Kumano Fireworks Festival is held, where you can enjoy about 200 fireworks echoing in the caves with sound and light. Mie Kotsu buses are also available. Access

Access to Onigajo Castle
Onigajo Castle can be accessed by both train and car. If using JR, take the "Wide View Nanki" limited express from Nagoya Station, which will take about 3 hours to Kumano-shi Station. From Shin-Osaka Station, take the "Kuroshio" limited express, which will take about 4 hours to Shingu Station. Then transfer to a local train and it will take about 20 minutes to Kumano-shi Station. If traveling by car, head from Nagoya Station to the Kisei Expressway via the Tomei-Hanshin Expressway, and head to the Kii-Nagashima IC. From there, take the Owase-Kita IC and proceed on Route 42, then head to the Owase-Minami IC. Finally, take the Kumano-Otoshi IC and arrive at Onigajo Castle in about 1 minute. From Osaka, head to the Nishi-Meihan Expressway (Kashiwara IC), then take Route 165 to Yamato-Takada, and then proceed on Route 24 to Kashihara. After that, take Route 169 and Route 309, and then proceed on Route 42 to arrive in Kumano-shi in about 3 hours (about 140km). However, it's recommended to visit with plenty of time as the required time may vary depending on traffic conditions.

History

The Origin of the Name of Onigajo Castle
There is a legend that during the reign of Emperor Kanmu, the pirate Tawara no Toda Maro was feared and was conquered by the general Sakanoue no Tamuramaro. Based on this legend, the place that was once called the demon's cave became known as Onigajo Castle. Onigajo Castle was the stage of the pirates who ravaged the sea of Kumano, and the courage and achievements of General Tamuramaro are praised. For visitors, it is a place that evokes the excitement of standing on the stage of a legend and the breath of history.
