The carbonated hot springs at Nagashima Onsen offer a pleasant hot spring experience with plenty of carbon dioxide gas dissolved in the water. This special hot spring is known as the "heart water" in Europe and is used to treat circulatory disorders in many medical institutions in Japan. When you bathe, your whole body is enveloped in fine carbonated bubbles, and you can see your skin turn red. This is because the carbon dioxide penetrates the skin and promotes blood flow.
